About us

who we are

In the fall of 2024, with the support of the City of Ottawa, the Ottawa Black Coalition (OBC) was founded by five Black leaders to unify advocacy efforts for Ottawa’s Black community. Rooted in an Africentric governance model, we prioritize collective decision-making, cultural knowledge, and community empowerment. Our work aligns with the City of Ottawa’s five-year Anti-Racism Strategy, which focuses on areas such as governance, housing, economic development, health, youth development, workplace equity, and institutional practices. The OBC builds on these efforts by adding a focus on education and justice, recognizing how these areas intersect with the core issues we address. Through advocacy, collaboration, and community-led solutions, we challenge anti-Black racism, promote equity and amplify Black voices in shaping meaningful change.

Public Support & Recognition

With a bold vision and deep roots in the community, the Ottawa Black Coalition (OBC) was founded by five dedicated Black leaders committed to advancing equity, justice, and collective empowerment. Supported by $100,000 in public funding from the City of Ottawa, the OBC is a targeted response to the urgent need for Black-led, community-driven solutions to the complex challenges facing Ottawa’s Black community.
Our founding board members collectively oversee over $30 million in public funding—an impressive testament to their proven leadership, credibility, and the vital importance of their work. This investment not only signifies institutional trust but also underscores the belief that a strong, united Black voice is essential for driving meaningful systemic change in Ottawa and beyond.
